playing with time...

this weekend i found a cool waterfall in Georgetown...

it gave me the perfect opportunity to try something fun with my camera...

in my never-ending quest to learn the ins and outs of photography...

i played with the shutter speed...

and the shutter speed is...

how long the camera lens stays open to capture an image...

soooo...

i thought i'd share my findings..:)

if you want to freeze time....

capture the moment...

you want a FAST shutter speed...

a fast shutter speed will make it appear that i FROZE time....

ready...

...FREEZE... 

(imagine me snapping my fingers).. :)

now if i slow down the shutter speed, just a scoge...

the picture just looks a bit blurry...

almost like the water tried to flow right as i was pushing the button..

like i just missed the "freeze"...

and this, my friends, is why many people (including myself) have blurry shots...

what they are photographing is moving quicker than their shutter speed...

and my last example is very cool...

at least i think so... :)

have you ever seen those cool pictures of waterfalls where the water looks silky...

like the water is actually flowing in the picture...

this is because the shutter is open longer...

and in the time it is open...

it is recording the movement...

and it turns out something like this...

now because i am a human..

i'm incapable of standing perfectly still...

so the shutter also recorded MY movement...

and that's why the bricks on the right are a bit blurry too...

just didn't want you to think the bricks were moving too...

a real professional would have a tripod...

 so the bricks would stay in focus...

but i never claimed to be a professional :)

maybe someday...

but until then... 

i'll keep amusing myself with my little camera :)
